<p>The invention relates to multi-stage horizontal electrical separators having a parallel horizontal gas passage for the purification of smoke gases containing dust, preferably for use in the reconstruction of already existing horizontal electrical separators and/or under given confined conditions of space. The aim of the invention is to find a horizontal electrical separator, by means of which, under given limited conditions of space, such as occur, for example, in reconstructions of existing systems, a substantially higher gas quantity per m<2> of base area than hitherto can be purified or, for the same quantity of crude gas, a higher separating effect can be achieved, in which the known internal equipment parts can be used, in which there is no need for the separate design of two complete horizontal electrical separators arranged one above the other and for the associated large constructional height, in which dust transport is simplified and the restriction of the effect of the electrode systems as a result of different aisle widths is reduced, and in which the energy consumption per m<3> of smoke gas to be purified does not have to be increased.
