PURPOSE:To obtain the titled glass having excellent infrared transmissivity, weatherability and excellent mechanical strength, by processing both stages of refining and melting a raw material for the glass in the same device. CONSTITUTION:The raw material (A) having 0.2-2,000mmHg vapor pressure in the melting state and of a sale substance or compd. of S, Se or Te, or a mixture of the above-mentioned substance and Ge and/or As, etc., is housed in one housing chamber (I) of a heat resistant container, (B) the other raw material having 0.1mmHg vapor pressure in the melting state and of a sole substance or compd. of Ge, Sb or Tl is housed in the other housing chamber (II) of the above-mentioned heat resistant container. Next, (C) an insert gas is supplied through a supply opening 1 and (D) a reducing gas is supplied through a supply opening 2, and then C component is poured into the housing chamber (I) and C and D components are poured into the housing chamber (II). Thereafter, only the chamber (II) is heated at a temp. above the m.p. of B component, kept for >=30min in said state and then cooled. Next, the chamber (I) and (II) are exhausted or are allowed to be in a atmosphere of C component, and then only the chamber (I) is heated to higher temp. than the m.p. of A component. After the vaporized A component is condensed in the chamber (II), the chamber (II) is heated and the contained substance in the chamber (II) is melted.
