PURPOSE:To obtain a flame retarder having excellent transparency and excellent coloring property without deteriorating essential characteristics of synthetic resin, by filtering, drying and then pulverizing a slurry which is obtained by adding an aq. soln. of SbCl3 to an aq. soln. of alkali silicate to that the ratio of SiO2/Sb2O3 is regulated to a specified value. CONSTITUTION:An aq. soln. obtained by dissolving SbCl3 into an aq. soln. of hydrochloric acid is added into an alkaline aq. soln. of alkali silicate so that alkali SiO2/Sb2O3 may be 2/3-7/3 in the weight ratio expressed in terms of SiO2/Sb2O3. Or an aq. soln., which is obtained by mixing an alkali silicate and an alkali stanate so that the weight ratio expressed in terms of SiO2 and SnO2 may be SnO2/SiO2 <=2, is added with the aq. soln. obtained by dissolving SbCl3 into the aq. soln. of hydrochloric acid that (SiO2+SnO2)/Sb2O3 may be (2/3-7/3) in the weight ratio expressed in terms of Sb2O3. Then the flame retarder contg. Sb fitted for the object to be the amorphous fine powder is obtained by filtering, washing, and then drying at 100-500 deg.C and pulverizing the slurry which is obtained thereby.
