PURPOSE:To produce a polyolefin in high efficiency and catalytic activity, by using a catalyst system composed of a specific transition metal compound, an organic halogen compound and a reaction product of a trialkylaluminum and water. CONSTITUTION:A polyolefin is produced by using a catalyst system composed of (A) a transition metal compound of formula Y2MRmX2-m (Y is cyclopentadienyl; M is titanium or zirconium; R is H or 1-6C alkyl; X is halogen; m is 0-2) [e.g. bis(cyclopentadienyl)-dichlorotitanium], (B) a reaction product of a trialkylaluminum (e.g. trimethylaluminum) and usually 0.5-1.2mol. of water (based on 1mol. of the trialkylaluminum) and (C) an organic halogen compound (e.g. trichloromethane).
