PURPOSE:To rapidly and accurately measure a length, by a method wherein four phase signals are inputted to a decoder to output a plurality of divided data and these data are sent to an operation circuit which in turn operates the falling of the output signal of the decoder on the basis of a count circuit to display the operation result. CONSTITUTION:Four phase signals A-D are inputted to an eight-division decoder 24 to output eight divided data D0-D7 which are, in turn, sent to an operation circuit 27. An eight unit count circuit 25 is operated by the edge of a clock signal to perform counting at the falling edge of a D-phase signal to output a bit 0 signal and a bit 1 signal and these signals are sent to the operation circuit 27. The output data D0-D7 of the decoder 24 and the count output of the count circuit 25 are inputted to the operation circuit 27 and operated while the operated result is displayed on a display device 1 through a display circuit 28. By this method, since a pulse width can be accurately and rapidly generated, a length measuring speed can be increased and a length can be accurately measured.
