PURPOSE:To classify ballast into different grain sizes while water washing the ballast, by passing the raw ballast charged into a water vessel from a hopper through the almost horizontal water current formed at the upper part in the water vessel by a water-jet means to remove the foreign matter such as dirt. CONSTITUTION:The water-jet means 16 for forming an almost horizontal water current at the upper part in the water vessel 1 is provided, and a partition wall 8 is furnished to separate the lower part in the water vessel 1 into plural sections in the flow direction of water. Ballast is charged into the water vessel 1 from the hopper 24 at the position close to the starting end of the water current, and the ballast, etc., settled in each section is separately discharged to the outside of the vessel 1 by conveying means 11-14. As a result, the foreign matter such as dirt and wooden chips is removed, and the ballast can be classified into different grain sizes while being washed with water. Furthermore, since a screen is not used, clogging can be completely obviated, and ballast can be effectively classified over a long period without necessitating any special maintenance. |
