PURPOSE:To increase the preventing rate for bulking of activated sludge, by adding a water-soluble cationic polymer having a specified intrinsic viscosity prepd. by the reaction of dialkylamine and occasionally ammonia with epihalohydrin to the activated sludge. CONSTITUTION:0.05-25pts.wt. (based on the amt. of dry solid in 100pts.wt. activated sludge) of a water-soluble cationic polymer of low mol.wt. having <0.05dl/g intrinsic viscosity, prepd. by the reaction of dialkylamine and occasionally ammonia (<= equimolar amt. to dialkylamine) with epihalohydrin is used as a chemical to be added for the prevention of bulking of activated sludge (wherein the intrinsic viscosity is measured in aq. KBr of 2mol/liter concn. as solvent). As the result, the preventing rate for bulking of activated sludge is improved, and elevation of SVI (sludge volume index) of activated sludge is retarded in a short time.
