NEW MATERIAL:A norbornane derivative of formula I (R is 2,2-dihalovinyl, carboxymethyl, lower alkoxycarbonylmethyl; Y is H and OH or carbonyl 0). EXAMPLE:7S*-(Carboxymethyl)bicyclo[2,2,1]heptan-2-one. USE:It is used as an intermediate to be derived to epijasmoids which are useful for perfumes or plant growth regulators. PREPARATION:The reaction of norbornylene of formula II with trihaloaldehyde of formula III (X is Cl, Br) in the presence of a Lewis acid gives an oxybrexane derivative of formula IV. The product is treated with zinc dust and acetic acid to give hydroxynorbornane derivative of formula V among formula I. When needed,the product is treated with an oxidizing agent to form a norbornane derivative of formula VI, then the product is treated with sulfuric acid, then a lower alcohol to give a compound of formula VII.
