PURPOSE:To provide a copolymer of high performance, made up of each specific structural units, capable of giving highly absorptive resins, builders for use in detergents, etc. all of which pose no concern of environmental pollution caused by disposal after their use. CONSTITUTION:For example, using a radical initiator such as hydrogen peroxide, a copolymerization is carried out, in a solvent such as benzene, between an olefin, carbon monoxide and maleic anhydride to obtain the objective copolymer made up of structural units of formulas I, II and III and/or IV (R1, R2 and R3 are each H, CH3, etc., M is H or alkali metal atom), respectively, pref. in such proportions as to be 10-70mol.%, 0.5-25mol.%, and 20-80mol.%, for the structural units of the formulas I, II, and III and/or IV, respectively.
