PURPOSE:To obtain the titled antiulcer agent, containing a water soluble fraction extracted from leaves of Fatsia japonica (Japan fatzia) and having high safety. CONSTITUTION:An antipeptic ulcer agent obtained by finely cutting leaves of Fatsia japonica (Japan fatzia), drying the cut leaves, adding an alcohol, such as methanol, stirring the mixture, carrying out extraction at 10-80 deg.C to provide an extract, suspending the above-mentioned extract in water, adding an alcohol sparingly soluble in water (e.g. n-butanol), distributing and extracting the resultant aqueous layer and concentrating the obtained aqueous layer to afford an active ingredient thereof having the following properties. Solubility: Readily soluble in methanol and sparingly soluble in ethyl ether, chloroform, benzene and ethyl acetate. Total nitrogen content: <=1.0wt.%. Color reaction: Positive to phenol-sulfuric acid reaction, resorcin-sulfuric acid reaction and anthrone-sulfuric acid reaction. pH: pH 4.2-4.8 of a solution prepared by dissolv ing 1g active ingredient in 10ml water. An oral agent, such as powder, capsule and solution are preferred as the dosage form. The does thereof is preferably 1,000mg/kg/day administered in about 3 divided portions a day.
