PURPOSE:To automatically and speedily perform positioning and then to perform retrieval even if a frame array shifts in the moving direction of a retrieval device by using information for position correction which is registered previously and finish mode information for image information output. CONSTITUTION:When none of frames PO, PM, and PN has an image and a frame SIGMAis retrieved, frames alpha(ax, ay) and beta(bx, by) close to PO and PM are set and alphais positioned in the center of a screen to measure coordinates (Xa, Ya); and an address (ax, ay); is displayed on a CRT 12 and stored in a memory 13. Further, gamma close to the frames beta and PN is processed similarly. Then, a frame beta'(bnx, ay) having an address in the same column with beta and a frame gamma'(ax, cy) having an address in the same column with alpha are assumed, coordinate values are represented as (X'b, Y'2) and (X'c, Y'c), and the movement quantity lambda' and deviation quantity DELTA of alphabeta' and alphagamma', and a frame number are calculated to determine reference frame coordinates, pitch and a correction quantity. Then when the address of the frame R is inputted, its position is accurately found.
