A battery warmer for a motor vehicle, with a device in which the battery (1) is surrounded by heat insulating material (2) and power to the heating element (6) is supplied by the vehicle's own battery charger (5). The central component of this invention is a voltage sensitive circuit breaker (8) placed in between the heating resistor (6) and alternator relay (9). The coupling voltage of the switch is less than the feed voltage from the alternator relay, but greater than the resting voltage of the battery. This means that the battery is only heated when the engine is running. Previously known components, temperature dependent switches (4) and temperature regulators (7) prevent the unnecessary heating of the battery during warm weather and overheating of the heating resistor and battery.
