PURPOSE:To obtain a thermal recording head meeting the enhancement of the smoothness of a head surface as well as a longer life, by a method wherein a protective layer includes a crystallized glass layer facing a heating resistor layer and an amorphous glass layer formed on the surface outside the crystallized glass layer. CONSTITUTION:In a thick-film type thermal recording head composed by laminating a heat-resistant layer 2, an electrodes 3 and a heating resistor layer 4, and a protective film 7, successively on an insulating substrate, such as an alumina substrate 1, the protective film 7 is composed of a plurality of layers. The protective film 7 is so constructed as to be composed of a crystallized glass layer 5 facing the heating resistor layer 4 and an amorphous glass layer 6 formed on the surface outside the crystallized glass layer 5. The upper layer 6 of the protective film made of an amorphous glass is superior in surface smoothness, which enables a smooth feed of a medium such as transfer paper. In addition, since a crystallized glass superior in wear resistance is used for the lower layer 5, the wear, crack, damage, and others can be prevented by the lower layer from extending downwards even if such troubles occur in the upper layer, thus never affecting the heating resistors.
