PURPOSE:To contrive higher functions and widen the range of utilization, by subtracting shift data from horizontal data inputted from an application software, thereby setting a printing-starting position to the same position irrespective of whether a paper-detecting sensor is located at a central part or on the left side of a platen. CONSTITUTION:Shift data alpha indicative of the difference between the printing position for the first character in the case of inserting a paper 8 with the left side of a platen 3 as a reference position and that in the case of inserting the paper 8 with a central position of the platen as a reference position is stored into a RAM 12 by a microprocessor (CPU) 10. When printing command data is inputted from an application software corresponding to a printer having the reference position at the central part of the platen, the CPU 10 reads a value set on a switch 21, then reads the shift data alpha conforming to the set value from the RAM 12, and tentatively stores the shift data alpha in the CPU 10. When left margin control data LM1 is inputted from the application software, the CPU 10 performs subtraction of LM1-alpha, sets the result into a column pointer X, and starts printing at the column pointer position X.
