A rotary piston mechanism of the intermittent abutment type, comprises an odd number of vane-like pistons interconnected by means of an endless chain linkage including alternate first and second pivots in which each second pivot is connected to a piston for rotation in a circular path and each first pivot is constrained by guide means to move in a non- circular path to cyclically vary the volumes of the chambers in which the pistons rotate. As shown, a rotary piston I.C. engine, comprises a cylindrical casing 24, Figs. 1, 2, having an inlet 18, an outlet 19, and a screw-threaded connection 20 for a spark-plug or fuel injector and rotary pistons 11, 12, 13, secured to bushes 15, 16, 17 for rotation in a chamber 10 about the axis 00 of a drive shaft 14. An endless chain linkage on either side of the chamber 10 comprises alternate links 30, 31, Fig. 3, pivotally connected to the pistons 11, 12, 13 by pivot pins 27, 28, 29 respectively and to the drive shaft 14 by pins 32 carried by sliders 41 slidable in a member 39 having counter-balancing weights 40. The pins 27, 28, 29 move in a circular path whilst the pins 32 carrying ballraces 35 are constrained to move in a non- circular, cam-track 33 to move the pistons relatively to each other so that the volumes of the spaces 36, 37, 38 between the pistons cyclically increase and decrease. The cam-track may be symmetrical about both axes x-x, y-y, Fig. 6, in which case the volumes vary in accordance with a sinusoidal law, it may be symmetrical about the y-y axis only, in which case the points at which the minimum and maximum volumes occur are displaced and a small minimum value may be followed by a larger minimum value so as to alter the compression ratio of the engine. Other cam-tracks may be employed to fulfil particular requirements of the engine. |
