PURPOSE:To obtain a coating compd. which contributes to an upgrading of a coated film type magnetic disk medium by using an Si compd. having 3.0+ or -0.5 sp. gr. to prepare a dispersion medium of the magnetic coating compd. and dispersing ferromagnetic powder into a resin binder by using such dispersion medium. CONSTITUTION:The dispersion medium of the magnetic coating compd. is prepd. from the Si compd. having 3.0+ or -0.5 sp. gr. such as carborundum SiC or silicon nitride Si3N4. More specifically, sintered balls are prepd. by using the powder of Si or Si2N4 and the ferromagnetic powder is dispersed into the resin binder by a ball mill. Since the Si compd. has an extremely low rate of wearing the dispersion medium and has the small sp. gr., the compd. decreases the damages of the magnetic powder to an extremely low level. Electromagnetic characteristics such as reproduction output are, therefore, improved and bit errors are extremely decreased.
