NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [X is H or arenesulfonyl; R is H, acyl or 2-(arenesulfonyl)-1,1-diazanediylalkyliden-1-yl]. EXAMPLE:4-Cyanomethylthioindole. USE:A synthetic raw material for novel indole derivative of formula II [A-B is group of formula III (R<2> is H or lower alkyl or formula IV] having antitumor activity and useful as a synthetic raw material for an antibiotic substance chuanghsinmycin. PREPARATION:A compound of formula I wherein X is arenesulfonyl can be produced by reacting a compound of formula V (X is arenesulfonyl; R<2> is lower alkyl) with chloroacetonitrile or bromoacetonitrile in the presence of ethylenediamine. The product can be easily converted to another compound of formula I wherein X is H by the detosylation reaction e.g. with Na salt of cyclohexanol.
