NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (R is H, alkyl, alkenyl, aralkyl or alkoxycarbonylmethyl; X is substituted sulfonyl). EXAMPLE:4-Ethoxycarbonylmethylthio-1-(p-toluenesulfonyl)indole. USE:A synthetic raw material for 4-mercaptoindole-type physiologically active substance such as 4-methylthiotryptamine and chuanghsinmycin. PREPARATION:A compound of formula I wherein R is H can be produced by reacting a diazonium salt of formula II with a dithiocarbonate of formula III (R<1> is lower alkyl; M is alkali metal) and reacting the resultant dithiocarbonic acid ester of formula IV in the presence of a base such as ethylenediamine. Another compound of formula I wherein R is other than H is produced by reacting the compound of formula IV in the presence of a base such as ethylenediamine and an electrophilic reagent of formula R-Y (Y is halogen or sulfonate).
