PURPOSE:To surely prevent cracking in the course of working even in the case of a material to be worked having brittleness, by applying working to a material to be worked in a condition where compressive stress is exerted by means of a compression fastening layer. CONSTITUTION:For example, a shrinkage fit method where a compression fastening layer 2 composed of iron and steel material is heated to high temp., fitted on a material 1 to be worked in the above state, and then cooled is applied. On cooling, the compression fastening layer 2 shrinks and exerts compressive stress to the material 1 to be worked. The material 1 to be worked is subjected to workings such as cutting, grinding, etc., in the above-mentioned compressive stress-exerted condition. At this time, even if the material to be worked has brittleness at ordinary temp., the structure of the above material to be worked is strengthened by means of the above-mentioned compressive stress, and cracking in the course of working can be surely prevented. This method is effective particularly in manufacturing a target material for sputtering.
