PURPOSE:To produce a material which forms a piston ring in which mechanical strength is improved by a nitriding treatment, by incorporating specific ratios of C, Si, Mn, Cr and Al into Fe. CONSTITUTION:The piston ring material contg., by weight, 0.4-1.1% C, 0.2-1.0% Si, <=1.0% Mn, 1.0-4.5% Cr, 0.3-2.0% Al and the balance consisting of Fe with impurities is prepared. The piston ring formed by said piston ring material is subjected to the nitriding treatment, by which the piston ring retaining wear resistance and seizing resistance as well as having the mechanical strength can be obtd.
