PURPOSE:To produce a compound of ScFeZn4O7 with hexagonal system layer structure which is useful for magnetic materials and semi-conductor materials by mixing Sc or its oxide, Fe or its oxide and Zn or its oxide at a specific atomic ratio and heating the mixture. CONSTITUTION:(A) Metallic Sc, Scandium oxide or a compound which is decomposed into Scandium oxide by heating, (B) metallic Fe, iron oxide or a compound which is decomposed into iron oxide by heating and (C) metallic Zn, zinc oxide or a compound which is decomposed into zinc oxide by heating are mixed at an atomic ratio of Sc-Fe-Zn 1:1:4. Then, the mixture is heated over 600 deg.C in air, in an oxidative atmosphere or a reductive atmosphere where Sc, Fe and Zn are not reduced from trivalent (Sc, Fe) and divalent (Zn) states respectively to give the objective compound.
