PURPOSE:To promote layering of the mixture in a combustion chamber by arranging a fuel injection valve in a cylinder block part, and by injection fuel from the side of an ignition plug arranged next to the combustion chamber so as to give upward kinetic energy to the injected fuel itself. CONSTITUTION:On the lower surface of a cylinder head 4, a plug hole 42 is formed at the position corresponding to the center of a cylinder 1A, and an ignition plug 5 is arranged with its tip end projecting into the plug hole 42. Also, a cavity 22 is formed at the top part center of a piston 2, and a combustion chamber X is formed by the cavity 22 and the lower surface 41 of the cylinder head 4. And at the top part of a cylinder block 1 on the side of the combustion chamber X, a fuel injection valve 6 inclined upward from a horizontal plane is arranged so that it heads for the ignition plug 5. In this way, upward kinetic energy is given to the fuel itself injected from the fuel injection valve 6 and thereby promotes layering of the mixture in the combustion chamber X.
