A wire cable used as a reinforcing cord in tyres comprises a core 1 consisting of stranded wires 3 and a peripheral layer 4 of single or stranded wires 6, wherein the ratio of the diameter of the core wires to that of the wires of the peripheral layer is between 1.05 and 2:1. There must not be wires of larger diameter than the core wires or smaller diameter than the peripheral wires between the core 1 and the peripheral layer 4. The intermediate layer 2 can have wires of the same diameter as the core wires 3 (as shown) or the peripheral layer wires 6 or a diameter intermediate thereof. Wire cables having alternative strand configurations are exemplified. The cable can be fretted, i.e. have wire or cable wound helically round it to limit radial expansion under axial compression. |
