One jaw M<SP>1</SP> of a pair of tongs is moved into engagement with a reaction jaw M<SP>2</SP> by a pneumatic ram housed in a cylinder 1 and connected to the jaw by links 16, 17, 19 and a hollow shaft 7. When the jaw M<SP>1</SP> pushes against the jaw M<SP>2</SP> the latter yields and its movement is damped by a double-acting adjustable dashpot 29 to which it is connected by links 24, 25, 28 and a shaft 22. The limits of travel of the link 28 and hence the jaw M<SP>2</SP> are controlled by an adjustable ring 31 which has abutment faces 34, 34a. The whole device is rotatable about an axis parallel to the axis of the shaft 7 and an axis perpendicular thereto. Opening and closing of the jaws is controlled by an electrically operated valve 37, Fig. 4 (not shown). |
