PURPOSE:To prevent erroneous detection by a reference position sensor and an angle of rotation sensor, by prohibiting abnormality judgement of the angle of rotation sensor when a angle of rotation position signal is inputted specified times while no reference position signal is inputted. CONSTITUTION:This method comprises an angle of rotation sensor 28 to output an angle of rotation position signal each time an internal combustion engine body 1 rotates fixed times, for example, each time a distributor shaft 26 adapted to make one turn per two turns of a crank shaft rotates 30 times, a reference position sensor 30 to output a pulse signal, for example, each time the distributor shaft 26 rotates by 180 deg. at a reference position during one rotation of the body 1 and the like. When an angle of rotation position signal outputted from the sensor 28 is inputted specified times while no reference position signal of the sensor 30 is inputted, abnormality judgement is prohibited while the sensor 30 is determined to be abnormal when an angle of rotation position signal is inputted specified times from the sensor 28.
