Sour hydrocarbon distillates are sweetened by contacting with an inhibitor sweetening agent in the presence of an oxidizing agent, for example air, and an alkaline reagent, characterized in that there is also present an N-alkyl-alkanolamine soluble in said distillate. Preferably the alkanolamine contains 4-30 carbon atoms in the alkyl group and 2-6 carbon atoms in the alkanol group. The inhibitor sweetening agent is preferably present in an amount of 0.0001-1% weight, and the N-alkyl-alkanolamine is preferably employed in an amount of 1-50% weight of the sweetening agent. The inhibitor sweetening agent is preferably a phenylene diamine or other aromatic diamine. |
