A method for actively determining a predetermined separation between a moving subject and a stationary or moving object, especially for determining a predetermined separation of a projectile from a target object for the purpose of detonating the projectile, electromagnetic waves in the form of beams being transmitted from the moving subject, these electromagnetic waves being reflected on the object, and the reflected beams being evaluated. Infrared beams are used. The infrared beams are transmitted from an infrared transmitter at the focus of infrared optics at the subject end and are focused by the infrared optics to produce a measurement beam pointing in the direction in which the subject is moving, which measurement beam strikes the focus of the infrared optics at the object end, to produce a focus spot. The range of the focus point at the object end from the infrared optics corresponds approximately to the predetermined separation. The infrared beams reflected on the object are focused again with the aid of the infrared optics and are fed to an infrared receiver which surrounds the infrared transmitter. A device for carrying out the method is also specified. <IMAGE>
