Method for reducing the speed of articles transported in a pneumatic transport system, in which the speed of the articles which are transported by means of an airflow in a transport pipeline is reduced at a point just before the outlet end of the pipeline. The method provides that air passages are formed at points situated shortly before the outlet end of the pipeline in the direction of movement of the articles, and that, at the air passages, air is removed at a suction rate which exceeds the volume of the airflow for the transport of the articles, so that the speed of the articles is reduced by an air counterflow flowing in through the outlet end of the transport pipeline.
