In an antilock brake system, a pressure modulator is assigned to each controllable wheel brake, in which modulator an outlet pressure chamber is separated from a control pressure chamber by a piston. The outlet pressure chamber forms a section of the brake line branch leading to the respective wheel brake. In normal operation, the outlet pressure of an auxiliary pressure source is admitted to the control pressure chamber and the piston is held in the position associated with the minimum volume of the outlet pressure chamber. By valve-controlled connection of the control pressure chamber to the unpressurised reservoir of the auxiliary pressure source or to its pressure outlet and shutting off the control pressure chamber both from the tank and from the pressure outlet of the auxiliary pressure source, pressure reduction, pressure build-up and pressure maintaining phases of the antilock brake system can be controlled by simple means.
