PURPOSE:To obtain carbon fibers having an excellent mechanical characteristic such as compressive characteristic by treating fibers which are obtainable from an acrylonitrile polymer and has a filament size in a specific range with a chemical in a liquid phase then drying and heating the fibers in a specific temp. range to a specific fiber density and calcining the fibers in a gaseous phase. CONSTITUTION:A chemical treatment of fibers which are obtainable from an acrylonitrile polymer contg. >=90wt% acrylonitrile and has 3-30 denier filament size for the purpose of accelerating the oxidation reaction of polyacrylonitrile or the cyclization reaction of a nitrile group or accelerating both reactions thereof is performed in a liquid phase. The treatment by, for example, potassium permanganate, potassium dichromate, etc. is performed. The fibers are then dried and heated at 100-200 deg.C to have 1.2-1.28g/cc fiber density. Such fibers are then calcined at 500-1,500 deg.C in, for example, gaseous Ar atmosphere. |
