PURPOSE:To exactly diagnose a combustion condition even if the change of the combustion condition of a burner is slight by subjecting the emission spectra of a flame to spectral analysis at a prescribed wavelength and determining the fluctuation in spectral emissivity and the inverse number of temp. from the result thereof. CONSTITUTION:The light of the flame 2 of the burner 1 is taken into a detector 3 at specified time intervals and the output of the detector 3 is supplied to a spectroscope 5. The spectroscope spectrally splits the light to the light spectra of every prescribed wavelength and inputs the spectrally split light spectra via an A/D converter 6 to an arithmetic unit 7. The unit 7 determines the spectral emissivity epsilon and temp. T by Wien's equation in accordance with the input data and plots the spectral emissivity epsilon and the inverse number 1/T of the temp. The inclination of the functions is determined from the distribution of the plotted points and a diagnosis is made as to at which excess air ratio of the burner 1 is burned.
