A headbox for a paper-making machine in which stock is directed between two wires moving downwardly has a closed-side reaction frame 60 (not shown), 58, 61, 52 lying normal to the stock flow passage 45 and connected to the stock outlet to minimize deflection thereof. Stock flows from tapering headers 43, 44 through slots 41, 42, acceleration passage 49, and explosion chamber 50 to slice 51. The headbox is formed by side wall member 38 secured by a number of pivot pins 53 to frame member 52 which is slidable relative to support 34, and by side wall member 54, 55, member 54 being secured by members 36, 37, to bracket 65 on which frame member 58 can longitudinally slide, and member 55 being pivotally connected to member 54 by hinge plate 56 and adjustably supported by screw and link mechanism 75. The pressure in chamber 45 is maintained constant by varying the width of the chamber by means of pressure cylinders 59 controlled through a piezo-electric crystal mounted in a wall of chamber 45. The reaction frame is carried by frame 30. Lifting jacks 26 and positioning jacks 70 are used to adjust the headbox position. |
