PURPOSE:To execute the optimum reply processing to a call automatically by discriminating whether or not a key input from a key input means exists within a prescribed time and selecting and executing one of plural processings in response to the result of discrimination at the detection of a call from a line. CONSTITUTION:When a call from a line 20 is detected by a network NCU 7, a CPU 1 gives a command to the NCU 7 to generate a DC loop to the line 20. When a carrier signal detection circuit 8 detects no carrier signal, an absence flag in a RAM 3 is checked. The absence flag is a flag is set ON/OFF automatically and when the operator resides in the vicinity of the equipment, the absence flag is set 'OFF'. Then a timer is set to a prescribed time and set to 'OFF' continuously in the presence of key input. If no key is inputted till a set time elapses, it is discriminated that the operator is parted from the equipment and the flag is set 'ON'. When the absence flag is set 'ON', the automatic answering recording processing is applied automatically, and when the said flag is set 'OFF', it is informed to the operator, and when the operator does not hooks off the handset, the automatic answering processing is applied as to the succeeding telephone calls.
