The appts. has a rotating drum (10) that carries two diametically opposite pairs of pick ups (12) that have access windows (9). Each multi-track pick up has a central block of ferrite with two parallel side elements (14, 15). A' C' profiled core elements (16, 17) also produced in a magnetic meterial are located on either side and are secured by glass. Transmission gaps are formed (21, 22) and the elements are wound with write and read coils (19, 20). Cross-talk between the elements is prevented by a slot (25) that contains a magnetci shield (62). Short circuit windings (27, 28) are included. The arrangement allows recordings to be made without isolation tracks.
