PURPOSE:To reduce the generating amount of NOx extremely, obtain high combustion efficiency and prevent abnormal temperature rise, by a method wherein catalyst flow passageways are arranged in series from the upstream side of a combustor so that the effective sectional areas are reduced sequentially, while combustion chambers are provided at the downstream side of the catalysts, respectively. CONSTITUTION:A small amount of mixture, having low gas concentration, is supplied to catalysts 4 upon starting. When the inlet port temperatures of respective catalysts 4 have arrived at temperatures necessary for catalytic activity, the flow rate of air and the concentration of gas are increased gradually to provide a gas turbine with a necessary load. As the flow rate of the mixture and the concentration of fuel are increased, the flow speed of the mixture in catalyst layers is increased. The flow speed of the mixture 8 in the catalyst layers is increased gradually from the upstream side toward the downstream side of the catalysts and, as a result, the mixture is burnt stably in the catalyst located at a position most suitable for the flow speed (flow rate), the concentration of gas and temperature of the mixture. Accordingly, the mixture is burnt in the catalyst of upstream side, in which the flow speed lowers, upon starting while the mixture is readily burnt stably in the catalyst of downstream side, in which the flow speed of the mixture increases, upon high load combustion.
