In the case of a method for depthsounding in water, an expected echo window is defined in the time domain about an expected echo time in order to improve echo detection in the received signal which is detected via a vertical directional receiving lobe. This expected echo window is designed to be larger than a maximum echo length which is to be expected and its window boundaries are located before and after the expected echo time, preferably symmetrically. The centroid integral is formed from the received signal which is bounded by the expected echo window and the time component of the centroid is defined as the echo delay time. The expected echo time is derived from the echo propagation in a known sounding depth. An edge discriminator is provided for this purpose, and the echo delay time determined by edge discrimination is used as the expected echo time.
