When loading pallets, it is necessary to order the articles in predetermined layer patterns, which in turn can vary from layer to layer. This is necessary in order to make the stack, which is formed on the pallet, stable in itself and to give the stack plane side surfaces. Known palletising devices are provided, for this purpose, with a plurality of mechanical apparatuses which engage in the conveying path of the articles and at the same time determine the position of the articles in accordance with a predefined control program. This manner of forming the layer pattern is, however, very costly. The change-over from one layer pattern to another also requires a large amount of time. The object of the present invention was thus substantially to reduce this high cost. This object is achieved, according to the invention, in that there is arranged, at the end of the conveyor belts which feed the articles individually, a light barrier which, in connection with a programmable computer of known type, determines the length of the further conveying path of the articles, which are pushed onto the conveyor belt arranged upstream of the loading table, in such a manner that, after every pulse received from the light barrier, the computer sets the abovementioned conveyor belt in operation for a preselected period of time.
