Using the digital signal converter according to the present invention, it is intended to be possible to convert input digital signals into output digital signals, which are nonlinearly dependent on the input digital signals, with little circuit expenditure. In the digital signal converter, only signal element combinations formed by fixed signal elements of the input digital signals are used for selection of a segment of the conversion characteristic which is in each case permanently allocated to these combinations. For the respective segment, an output digital signal y of the form y = aix + bi is formed, where x is the input digital signal to be converted in each case and ai, bi are a coefficient pair allocated to the segment selected in each case. The digital signal converter can be used as nonlinear echo canceller in data transmission devices for transmitting digital signals by the duplex channel method via two-wire lines.
