The engine has pistons (30) acting to drive crankshafts (40). Oscillating and rotary motion of a sleeve valve is transmitted from one end of each crankshaft by helical gear trains (72,73) to the sleeve crankshafts (74) via intermediate idlers (71). - Axial movement of an idler on its shaft causes a change in the angular relationship of engine and valve crankshafts. It thus causes a change in the valve timing of the engine.
