A settable cementitious composition is prepared by mixing a ground mineral clinker that contains the phase 4CaO.3Al2O3.SO3 with a source of SO3 (eg. calcium sulfate), a source of CaO (eg. lime and/or ordinary Portland cement) and a fibrous material, in the presence of water. The fibrous material, which is preferably selected from synthetic organic fibres, wollastonite fibres and mixtures thereof, gives rise to improvements in the strength characteristics of the hardened masses formed by the setting of the compositions. The compositions find use in the production of monolithic packs to be used as supports in underground mining operations and also in the production of ceiling tiles and similar constructional articles. |
