In a vacuum induction furnace for melting metals and/or for treating molten metal, a crucible made of ceramic ramming compound is provided, which is seated in a vacuum vessel divided into an upper part, a central part and a lower part. The central part is surrounded by an induction coil. Cooling pipes (14) are embedded in the ramming compound of the crucible (2), particularly in the region of the central part. These cooling pipes have in each case an inflow part (22) and an outflow part (23) and are detachably and sealingly passed through an annular channel (15) from which cooling air is fed to the inflow part (22). A pulling device (32-35) and seals in the region of the upper and lower wall of the annular channel (15) result in a leaktight closure. The pulling device (32-35) can be easily detached, so that each cooling pipe (14) can be detached and replaced individually in a simple way. The inflow part (22) and the outflow (23) part can be connected to form a two-part pipe connection (20). An inflow gap and an outflow gap can be arranged additionally between each cooling pipe (14) and the pipe connection (20). <IMAGE>
