A process for the production of aliphatic a -b -unsaturated nitrides comprises causing a mixture of an a -olefin, NH3 and O2 or an oxygen-containing gas to react in the vapour phase at elevated temperature in the presence of an oxidation catalyst containing Fe, Sb and O2 such that the Fe/Sb ratio is from 1: 0.11 to 1: 20. With respect to the conversion of propylene to acrylonitrile a typical reaction mixture consists of:-to each part by volume of propylene, 0.2-5 parts NH3, 0.1-5 parts O2 and 0-10 parts steam. Diluents such as nitrogen, oxides of carbon, light saturated hydrocarbons may also be incorporated. Comparative examples are given which relate to the preparation of acrylonitrile. Acetonitrile is mentioned as a by-product.ALSO:An oxidation catalyst contains Fe, Sb and O2 such that the Fe/Sb ratio extends from 1 : 0,11 to 1 : 20. If desired the catalyst may be supported e.g. on pumice, colloidal SiO2, Al2O3 or carborundum. Various methods of preparing the catalysts are specified but all are conventional. The catalysts may be used as a fixed or fluidized bed. Comparative examples are given. |
