The invention relates to a stirring apparatus having an agitator provided with agitating elements and having a drive unit, provided with a gear, for driving the agitator, in particular for stirring and mixing paints, plastering or surfacing compositions, pastes, glues or like materials preferably for use in building. The object underlying the invention is to create a stirring apparatus of the generic type mentioned at the outset which is built more as a machine and less as a handtool and as a result can operate, in particular also at times, automatically and unattended. The object is achieved according to the invention in that the agitator is arranged beneath a covering shield beneath which project the agitator elements of the agitator, in that the covering shield can be seated as a cover on a container filled with material to be stirred and in that the drive unit, the covering shield and the agitator are combined together to form a stirrer head.
