Organic peroxy compounds are obtained by oxygenating unsaturated compounds which are (a) olefin derivatives of the formula R3R4C = CR5-CHR1R2, (b) cisoid compounds of the formula or (c) polycyclic aromatic compounds of the formula wherein X is an oxygen atom, a propenylene radical or a radical of the formula >C = O or where n is an integer, R1 to R13 are hydrogen atoms or electron-donating moieties which are alkyl, alkenyl, cycloalkyl, cycloalkenyl, alkoxy, aryloxy, acyloxy, aryl, aralkyl or aralkenyl radicals which may be suitably substituted and, in (a) or (b), wherein any such group may be joined with any other such group in the same molecule to form a ring, and R14 and R15 are each divalent organic moieties which form an aromatic ring in fusion with the centre ring, provided that no more than one of R3, R4 and R5 is hydrogen, by mixing the organic compound, hydrogen peroxide and a positive chlorine, bromine or iodine compound and isolating the organic product obtained. Suitable positive halogen compounds are hypohalous acids, hypohalites, hypohalite esters, N-haloamides, imides and other N-halo compounds. The process may be carried out in solution, in which case the addition of a water-miscible organic solvent may be necessary, or in a two-phase system using a water-immiscible diluent. If desired, the primary (hydro) peroxy product may be transformed in situ to some other oxygenated derivative before isolation. The process may be applied to the oxygenation of terpenes and steroids of the formulae (a) or (b) above.
