PURPOSE:To shorten a total printing time by seeking printing time for combinations of normal and reverse printing directions of an immediately following line and a line following the former, and determining the printing direction of the immediately following line. CONSTITUTION:The left and C1 and right end C2 of printing line are detected based on printing data of an immediately following line A in a printing buffer for three lines. After this, the left end D1 and right end D2 of printing line are detected based on printing data of a line right after the immediately following line B. The four combinations of printing directions of the immediately following line and the line right after the immediately following line are available, i.e. normal/normal, normal/reverse, reverse/normal and reverse/reverse. Printing times t1-t4 of each combination are calculated to seek a minimum value. If the minimum value is t1 or t2, the printing direction of the immediately following line is set as E. If the minimum value is t3 or t4, the printing direction of the immediately following line is set as a reverse of the direction E. Thus the total printing speed can be improved.
