PURPOSE:To obtain a dispersant providing coal-water slurry having fluidity even at high coal concentration, dispersing coal powder into water, comprising a specific water-soluble copolymer (neutralized material thereof). CONSTITUTION:The dispersant for aimed coal-water slurry comprising a water- soluble copolymer derived from (A) 0.2-5mol% vinyl monomer shown by formu la I (A<1>-A<3> are H, methyl, etc.; R<1> is -CO-, etc.; R<2> is 2-4C alkylene; n is 1-100; R<3> is 1-30C alkyl, etc.; X is H, etc.), (B) 50-94.8mol% unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer shown by formula II (R<4>-R<6> are H, methyl, etc.; M is H, etc.), (C) 5-45mol% sulfoalkyl (meth)acrylate monomer shown by formula III (R<7> is H, methyl, etc.; Z is 1-4C alkylene; Y is H, etc.) and (D) 0-20mol% another monomer copolymerizable with the components A-C and/or a water-soluble copolymer obtained by further neutralizing the copolymer with a basic substance.
