PURPOSE:To correct a character in one position to correct the same character in all positions when the same unreadable or erroneously read character exists in plural positions, by newly providing a same character discriminating means. CONSTITUTION:A corrected character 18, recognition candidate characters of the other characters, and degrees of resemblance between them are inputted from a storage means 5 to a control means 8a and a same character discriminating means 9. If five recognition candidate characters whose degrees of resemblance are high and differences of degree of resemblance among respective characters are smaller than a prescribed value, the same character is discriminated. All characters discriminated as the same character are substituted with the already inputted correct character. In an example shown in the figure, characters 14 and 15 are discriminated as the same character as a character 18 and characters 'KAN' as recognition results of characters 14 and 15 stored in the storage means 5 are substituted with a character 'SHIKII' as the corrected character 18.
