PURPOSE:To eliminate useless operation of the reader in setting an original with upside down by storing once read picture information in a memory and giving error notice when the picture information is white paper information so as to inhibit the output of the memory information. CONSTITUTION:Serial output picture information from a picture read section 1 is written sequentially in a page memory 2 and inputted also to an ineffective picture detection circuit 4. The circuit 4 checks the presence of difference of contract of picture elements for each line sequentially to discriminate whether the picture information is effective or ineffective. When all the lines of one page picture information are discriminated to be ineffective, a detection signal of an ineffective picture is outputted. In receiving the detection signal, an output circuit 3 supplies picture information of the memory 2 to the post-stage and the white paper information of the memory 2 is abolished substantially. The notice circuit 5 consists of a buzzer or a lamp, is operated in response to a detection signal and informs the reading of white paper to the user residing nearby.
