PURPOSE:To eliminate wasteful time and to shorten the time required for image formation by normally rotating a rotary drum for the effective part of the image to be formed and rotating the rotary drum at a high speed in other cases. CONSTITUTION:An original scanning unit 14 is advanced by an optical step motor 20 subjected to driving control so as to move at the normal speed by as much as the length (length of sheet paper) instructed from a control part. An end signal is transmitted to a printer 122 side through a signal line when the unit moved by as much as the instructed length of the paper. A control unit 1305 controls a drum motor so as to accelerate the same upon receipt of said end signal. The control unit 1305 transfers such data at which a frequency division ratio lowers through the signal line. The transfer drum is rotated at the time of retreating the optical system at the speed higher than at the time of copying in such a manner, by which the copying time is reduced.
