PURPOSE:To obtain a good quality of fluorescent screen, and moreover, to improve the luminous brightness, by precoating the inner surface of a face plate with a specific precoating solution prior to forming a phosphor layer. CONSTITUTION:The precoating solution is composed mainly of polyvinylalcohol, whose saponification value is 85.0 to 98.0 mol %, and the viscosity of its 4 % water solution is 45 to 70 cps. Such a precoating solution is spread on the inner surface of a face plate, and then it is dried to form a precoating membrane. The adhesion between the phosphor layer and the inner surface of the face plate is therefore improved, a removal of the phosphor layer is prevented, and moreover, a high quality color picture tube whose luminous brightness is improved can be obtained.
